About Sciatica Pain
Injury or pressure on the sciatic nerve may affect the legs, causing inflammation, discomfort, tingling and some numbness. The sciatic nerve is a large nerve running from the buttocks down the legs to each foot. This nerve controls the muscles in the back of the legs, and provides sensation to parts of the legs.
Any irritation or squeezing of the sciatic nerve can produce Sciatica. Typically, however, symptoms of Sciatica are related nerve compression as a result of a herniated disk or bone spur. Other causes include, but are not limited to: Piriformis syndrome (a neuromuscular disorder), fracturing of the pelvis, injury to the buttocks or thighs, and tumors.
Symptoms of Sciatica
Discomfort is extremely variable. For some, it feels similar to a mild ache, for others like a sharp, burning sensation, and in some cases it can be excruciating. It is possible to have discomfort in one area of the leg and numbness in another. The leg may also feel weak. The discomfort may be worse following standing or sitting, or with sneezing, coughing or laughing. Walking or bending backwards can lead to more intense leg pain.
