What is Degenerative Disc Disease?
Degenerative Disc Disease, also referred to as “DDD,” is a condition in which the tissue that forms the intervertebral disc begins to deteriorate resulting in serious pain. While it is normal for discs to deteriorate through the process of aging, experiencing intense pain is not. Those who suffer from Degenerative Disc Disease describe it as an absolutely excruciating pain. In some cases, the discomfort is strong enough to alter the way one lives his or her life.
The degeneration in the spine’s discs becomes painful when the discs are unable to properly absorb shock for the vertebrae in the spinal column. This can make flexing, bending, twisting and any other activity that causes the spine to bend extremely uncomfortable and painful. Additionally, serious cases of Degenerative Disc Disease can apply pressure to the spinal cord and nerves, which can lead to more pain and impaired nerve function.
Symptoms of Degenerative Disc Disease
There are a number of symptoms that are present in Degenerative Disc Disease. Symptoms include: chronic pain in the lower back that can be felt as far as the buttocks, hips or thighs; discomfort when the spine puts pressure on the disc, such as during any sitting, bending, lifting, twisting or walking; and chronic neck pain starting out in the upper spine that can be felt all the way to the shoulders, arms and occasionally even hands.
The place where the pain originates is highly dependent upon where the damaged disc is in the spinal column. The pain can originate from any injury affecting the spine. This includes major injuries, such as those resulting from a car accident, minor injuries from shorts falls or tripping, and repetition from normal motion, such as lifting something or bending over.
